Karachi airport cleared of attackers
KARACHI June 09 : Karachi airport has been declared clear of terrorists in a massive operation by Pakistan Army and law enforcement agencies.
At least thirteen security personnel have been martyred and ten terrorists killed in an operation to clear Old Terminal of Karachi Airport from terrorists.
A large number of weapons including SMGs, RPGs, grenades and suicide jackets, were also recovered during the operation.
The martyred security personnel included eight members of Airport Security Force.
The terrorists attacked the airport after 11 last night with grenades and automatic weapons and gained access to the old terminal.
The security forces on duty retaliated and contingents of Pakistan Army, Rangers and Police commandoes reached the Old Terminal immediately and started operation against terrorists.
Corp Commander Karachi supervised the operation while DG Pakistan Rangers, IG Sindh, Additional IG Karachi were also present at the airport.
Grenade blasts and heavy gunfire continued throughout the night.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah also reached the airport to monitor the situation.
Governor Sindh Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan also contacted the law enforcing agencies and directed to control the situation at the earliest.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif called DG Rangers Sindh and asked him to ensure the safety of passengers.
All planes and passengers remained safe and security was further beefed up to ensure security of main Jinnah Terminal and passengers.
Additional Inspector General Sindh Police told reporters that the killed and injured persons had been shifted to Jinnah Hospital.
Later talking to journalists, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah said all the ten terrorists, who attacked the terminal, have been killed.
He said the terrorists entered the terminal with the design of destroying sensitive installations; however, the security forces foiled their plot.
Director General Inter Service Public Relations Major General Asim Salim Bajwa said the airport has been completely cleared of terrorists and it would be handed over to Civil Aviation Authority by this afternoon.
Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif has congratulated the Army contingents and law enforcement agencies on their successful operation.
He paid rich tribute to the martyred security personnel.
President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have appreciated the successful operation of the security forces against terrorists.
They said security forces protected national assets with great courage and valor.
Meanwhile, talking to media persons, the Director General Sindh Rangers Major General Rizwan Akhtar said that the terrorists had come in two groups and they gained access to the terminal through the Cargo gate and Fokker gate.
He said no aircraft was damaged in the attack and all sensitive installations remained safe.
